Kasturi, as per a famous couplet by Kabir Das, a phenomenal Hindustani poet, refers to a smell a deer runs around an entire forest for, searching desperately, unaware that it comes from its own navel. That to us is the reality of the Indian sense of fragrances. As we chase the foreign notes, we have forgotten that we are the creators of the world’s most phenomenal scents. It’s time to come back home...to something better, personal and magnanimously fragrant.
What we offer are not regular ittars. With globalization and by the virtue of us becoming globetrotters, our scent sensibilities changed. But the world of ittars, commencing from 500 years before, was stuck in time. This pure charismatic world needed a contemporary edge and the modern world needed the pure art of perfumery. Like jilted lovers, the two were apart. Until now. Kastoor is a humble attempt to bridge this gap. “Modern Ittars” created to suit the modern scent sensibilities and pay homage to our history and fragrant culture. It’s time to reinvent the purest art of perfumery for the modern world.
ABOUT THE FOUNDER
Born in Banaras (Varanasi, Kashi) of Uttar Pradesh, India, I had the privilege to witness the glorious days of ittars. I have played in the fragrant lanes of UP, and grown up seeing the charming ittar bottles kept on the vanity drawers of my mum. Right from childhood, I have visited the ‘bhattis’ where the world’s most phenomenal scents are made. This is my cultural debt, to the era, to the artisans, to the experience.
